U-M & MSU women are eliminated from Big 10 tournament

Kicking off the 2nd round in the morning, the #7 Michigan Wolverines cut a second-half, double-digit deficit to five points, but missed opportunities down the stretch in falling to the #2 Ohio State Buckeyes, 57-48, in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Women's Tournament.

Carmen Reynolds led the Wolverines with 14 points and Courtney Boylan scored 10 points to go with five assists. Jenny Ryan pulled down in a team-high eight rebounds and five steals to go with five points.

Michigan held Ohio State to another season low of 57 points, but could not get going offensively in the first half. Overall, the Wolverines shot 34% from the floor and forced 21 Buckeye turnovers.

With an overall record of 20-11, Michigan will now await postseason consideration when the NCAA announces their field of 64 on Monday, March 12th at 7 p.m.

In the nightcap, the #5 Michigan State Spartans' run for the 2012 Big Ten championship came to an end as they lost to the #4 Purdue Boilermakers, 73-64 in the Big Ten quarterfinals. Senior Lykendra Johnson led the Spartan attack posting her 10th double-double of the season with a season-high 23 points & 11 rebounds, and a career high five blocks.

Junior Jasmine Thomas had quality minutes off the bench, scoring 12 points, while senior Porsche Poole also scored double figures with 10 points.

Much like their cross-town rival from Ann Arbor, Michigan State are now 20-11 this season and will await their postseason fate on Monday, March 12th..
