MSU rally to win; U-M & WMU dominate; CMU & EMU fall
Andrew Maxwell passed for a career-high 290 yards and two touchdowns as the Michigan State Spartans rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat the Indiana Hoosiers, 31-27. Aaron Burbridge caught eight passes for 134 yards and Le'Veon Bell ran for 121 yards & two touchdowns on 37 carries for the Spartans (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten), who were coming off a 17-16 loss to #12 Ohio State.
Behind a 340-yard (235 rush, 105 pass) performance from senior quarterback Denard Robinson, the Michigan Wolverines pounded the Purdue Boilermakers, 44-13, at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Wolverines jumped out to a three-touchdown first-half lead on the way to winning their Big Ten opener. The Wolverine defense allowed just 210 total yards, as well as only 13 points for the third consecutive game.
Tyler Van Tubbergen threw 5 touchdowns and ran for another in an impressive outing as the Western Michigan defense kept the pressure on the Massachusetts backfield for 60 minutes as the Broncos defeated the Minutemen, 52-14, at Waldo Stadium. With the win, the Broncos improve to 3-3 on the season, and even their Mid-American Conference record to 1-1. Overall, Western Michigan held UMass to 218 offensive yards and forced three turnovers.
First-half Toledo turnovers propelled Central Michigan to an early lead, but their own turnovers doomed the Chippewas in the second half as they fell to the Rockets, 50-35. Central Michigan (2-3, 0-2 MAC) scored two touchdowns following Toledo fumbles in the first half, but Toledo (5-1, 3-0 MAC) responded with two interception returns for touchdowns in the fourth quarter. CMU sophomore receiver Courtney Williams’ two touchdown passes were a career-high and senior receiver Cody Wilson topped the 100-yard receiving plateau for the third straight game with 108.
The Kent State Golden Flashes spoiled Eastern Michigan's homecoming game after posting a dominating 41-14 win over the Eagles. The setback leaves EMU with an 0-5 overall record and 0-2 in the MAC. Kent State held a 17-7 halftime lead and broke the game open in the early stages of the 3rd quarter on a series of big-play efforts. The Eagles was led by sophomore running back Bronson Hill, who gained 70 yards on four carries with one touchdown. EMU's redshirt sophomore quarterback Benz completed just 9-of-17 passes for 93 yards and a score.
