UDM takes down YSU; U-M advance; MSU downs Badgers
The Detroit Titan women closed out the home regular season with another win as UDM took advantage of a few Youngstown State injuries to claim a 62-48 victory over the Penguins at Calihan Hall. The victory was also #11 at home for Detroit, making it the second-straight year the Titans have won 11 home games and tying for the third most home victories in a season.
Sophomore Shareta Brown recorded her 12th double-double of the year and 24th of her career with a game-high 19 points & 13 rebounds, connecting on 8-of-12 from the field. Junior Senee Shearer finished with 17 points and pulled down five rebounds, while sophomore Audrey Matteson pitched in seven points & five rebounds.
The win moved Detroit to 16-11 on the season and 9-6 in the Horizon League, keeping the Titans alive for a No. 3 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament. Detroit can get that No. 3 seed with a win this Saturday afternoon at Valparaiso, which is set for 1 pm ET.
Nicole Elmblad scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the #5 Michigan Wolverines ran over the #12 Indiana Hoosiers, 67-40 in the first round of the 2013 Big Ten women's tournament.
Rachel Sheffer added 12 points for the Wolverines (21-9), and Nya Jordan had eight points & 13 rebounds. Michigan outrebounded Indiana 45-30, outscored the Hoosiers 32-10 in the paint, and never trailed in the game.
With the win, Michigan will now face their in-state rival #4 Michigan State in the quarterfinals this Friday night at 9:30 pm ET.
The Michigan State Spartans got their fifth straight win over the Wisconsin Badgers at the Breslin Center, 58-43, and in the process set up a Sunday of basketball that could result in their fourth Big Ten title in five years.
No. 10 MSU (23-7, 12-5 Big Ten) first needs Michigan to beat Indiana at 4 p.m. this Sunday. The Spartans end the regular season at 6 p.m. at Breslin against Northwestern, perhaps with a chance to clinch a share – in what could be a four-way tie between MSU, IU, U-M and Ohio State.
