Lions draft Ansah at #5; CMU's Fisher picked #1 by Chiefs
With Hall of Famer & Madden '25 coverman Barry Sanders present, the Detroit Lions selected Ezekiel Ansah with the 5th pick in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Ziggy, as some would call him, is a 6'5, 271 pound defensive end from BYU. Originally a native of Accra, Ghana, Africa, Ansah tallied 62 tackles, 13 for loss, including 4.5 sacks in one season as a full-time starter. The versatile defensive lineman added nine pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one interception while lining up as a rush outside linebacker, defense end and defensive tackle.
One of Ansah's greatest accomplishments in his collegiate career with BYU was helping the Cougars earn a 23-6 victory over San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl on Decemeber 20th of last year. The Lions will continue with Day 2 of the draft this Friday night with two more picks - #36 (2nd round) and #65 (3rd round).
In other draft news, Eric Fisher, an offensive tackle from Central Michigan, was the number one overall pick selected by the Kansas City Chiefs. Fisher became only the second Chippewa in history to ever to go in the first round and the first CMU player to ever be selected number one overall. Joe Staley was the only other Chippewa to go in the first round. Fisher is also the first offensive tackle taken #1 overall since Michigan’s Jake Long went first in 2008. Orlando Pace in 1997 and Hall of Famer Ron Yary in 1968 are the only other No. 1 pick tackles.
