DETROIT TIGERS - 2013 AL CENTRAL DIVISION CHAMPIONS!
.
After several days of Cleveland not losing, Detroit had to earn their title the hard way as Max Scherzer achieved his 21st victory in the Tigers' 1-0 shutout win over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field to become the 2013 American League Central Division Champions! They have won three straight division titles for the first time since the days of Ty Cobb when they won the AL pennant way back in 1907-09.
Scherzer walked a season-high six batters, but struck out 10 and didn’t allow a run. Austin Jackson opened the game with a triple to the right-center fence, followed by Torii Hunter who grounded a single into center to score him. Closer Joaquin Benoit came into the game in the 9th inning to work his third straight day for the first time this year to finish off Minnesota and celebrate the night away.
On Opening Day, the Tigers began their quest for the Central title with a win at Minnesota. Nearly six months later, they celebrated there. After resting on Thursday, Detroit will finish off the regular season on the road with a 3-game weekend interleague series against Miami, starting this Friday night at 7 pm. As it stands now, they could face Oakland in the AL Divisional Series, but until then, the Motor City celebrates with the Detroit Tigers on a third straight AL Central division championship!
MAGIC NUMBERS REMAINING
NL CENTRAL - St. Louis down to 1 after defeating Washington & Pittsburgh losing to the Chicago Cubs
AL WILD CARD - Tampa Bay & Cleveland down to 4 after wins & Texas defeating Houston
