Titans eliminated early; Oakland goes OT to advance
The Titans' second-half run came up short as 8th-seeded Detroit were eliminated early by the #5 Milwaukee Panthers, 83-73, in the first round of the 2014 Horizon League Tournament. The loss brings the Titans season to an end at 13-19 (6-10 HL).
Junior co-captain Juwan Howard Jr. led Detroit with a game-high 21 points, six assists, and two steals, while freshman guard Matthew Grant finished with 16 points and senior Evan Bruinsma added 14 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Travis Bader made two free throws with 0.6 left in regulation, then hit another pair with 9 seconds left in overtime to allow the #6 Oakland Golden Grizzlies to survive against the #7 Youngstown State Penguins, 96-92 in the Horizon League tournament opener.
Bader finished with 39 points and set a new school & tournament record by going 18-of-18 from the free throw line. Dante Williams added 12 points off the bench, while Corey Petros recorded 17 points & nine rebounds for the Grizzlies. Oakland (13-19) will now face #3 Wright State in the Horizon League quarterfinals this Friday night at 7 pm ET in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
