EMU advance to MAC quarters; women of WMU & Oakland fall
Led by their defense, the Eastern Michigan Eagles overcame an 11-point halftime deficit & outscored the Northern Illinois Huskies in the final 20 minutes to earn a 53-48 victory in the second round of the 2014 MAC Tournament. The victory marks the 20th win for EMU (20-13) to become the first Eastern Michigan men's team to accomplish that win total since the 1997-98 Eagles that went on to the NCAA Tournament. The victory was also a historical one for head coach Rob Murphy, who collected his 50th career win at EMU. The Eagles will face Buffalo this Thursday night in the MAC quarterfinals.
Western Michigan defeated Toledo twice in the regular season, but couldn’t pull off a third win this year as the Broncos were defeated by the Rockets, 72-61, in the second round of the Mid-American Conference women's tournament. Western finished the 2013-14 season with a 13-18 overall record.
Kim Bee recorded her fifth double-double of the season and Bethany Watterworth added 14 points, but it wasn't enough as the Oakland Golden Grizzlies lost to the Youngstown State Penguins, 68-64, in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League women's tournament at the Beeghly Center. The Golden Grizzlies finished the season with a 13-17 record, four more wins than last season, and the first non-losing record in conference play since 2010-11 when they were in the Summit League.
