Red Wings inch closer to playoff spot with 3-2 win vs. Carolina
Gustav Nyquist and Pavel Datsyuk scored in the 3rd period as the Detroit Red Wings pulled off a huge win over the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-2.
Henrik Zetterberg opened the scoring with a powerplay goal early in the 2nd period and goaltender Jimmy Howard made 30 saves for Detroit, who was outshot 28-16 over the final two periods.
The Red Wings could have clinched a playoff berth with the win over Carolina as long as Pittsburgh defeated Ottawa in regulation, but the Penguins failed by letting the Senators rally from a 3-0 deficit to win in overtime, 4-3. On the plus side, Detroit, for the moment, regained their third-place spot in the Atlantic Division bracket, which was held by Boston prior to the game.
While the Red Wings (97 points) hope the Bruins (95 points) lose to Washington Wednesday night, they will finish off the regular season on the road with their final two games, beginning with this Thursday night against Montreal at 7:30 pm. As for Ottawa (95 points), they face the newly crowned President's Trophy winner New York Rangers on the same day at 7 pm. Detroit needs two points within their last two games to clinch a playoff spot.
