Tough loss for Tigers as Pirates complete series sweep, 8-4
Starting pitcher Francisco Liriano shut down Detroit for seven innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates finished a three-game sweep of the Tigers with an 8-4 win. Detroit never got a runner past second base against Liriano.
Kyle Ryan (1-2) took the loss as he gave up two runs on three hits and five walks in four-plus innings. Frustration was on display as Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was ejected in the 5th inning by home-plate umpire Sam Holbrook for arguing a called third strike on J.D. Martinez. J.D. did manage to hit a three-run homerun off Antonio Bastardo in the 8th inning before Pittsburgh stormed back with four runs in the 9th inning.
Detroit hopes to shrug off the sweep as they get ready for the 4th of July three-game weekend series against Canada's Toronto Blue Jays. The first game is set for this Friday night at 7 pm.
