Torres scores just in time to give Canucks 1-0 Cup lead
After 59 scoreless minutes in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals opener, Raffi Torres scored on an exceptional pass from Jannik Hansen with 18.5 seconds to play as the Vancouver Canucks stunned the Boston Bruins, 1-0.
Torres put a slick redirection past Boston's goalie Tim Thomas to score the latest go-ahead goal in a finals game since 1992, when Mario Lemieux connected with 13 seconds left in Pittsburgh’s series-opening win over Chicago.
Roberto Luongo made 36 saves in his third shutout of the postseason for the Canucks, but Thomas matched him until Torres—the only Vancouver player with previous finals experience—slipped through the Bruins’ defense for an eye-popping goal that launched a wild celebration at Rogers Arena.
With momentum on their side, the Canucks will look to take the next step to the Cup against the Bruins in Game 2 this Saturday night in Vancouver.
