Max Scherzer struck out nine over seven strong innings and the AL Central leading Tigers won their third straight, snapping Toronto’s three-game winning streak. Victor Martinez drove in two runs for the Tigers that beat the Blue Jays, 4-2.

In the makeup of a May 17 rainout, the game was tied at 2 when Tigers manager Jim Leyland was ejected in the 7th inning for arguing a call that initialiy ruled Andy Dirks safe at first base, but later was ruled out by the home plate umpire. Afterwards, Detroit scored twice in the next inning to win it.

Joaquin Benoit (2-3) picked up the win with a scoreless inning. Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his 18th save in as many attempts. Toronto put two on against Valverde, but pinch-hitter Juan Rivera hit into a game-ending double play.

The Tigers continue their interleague play against the New York Mets in a 3-game series, which begins this Tuesday night at Comerica Park.
