Team president of basketball operations Joe Dumars vowed during the offseason that the Pistons would return to their roots and reestablish their reputation as a mentally-tough club that grinds out victories.
With the season already 35 games old, the Pistons haven't come close to playing what Dumars considers "Detroit basketball." They are a perimeter-oriented team that gets easily frustrated when its jump shots aren't falling. Its defense consistently gives up close-range baskets and often shirks when opponents get physical.
After an empty 0-3 West Coast trip, the Pistons head home with an 11-24 record and an angry head coach who is tired of his club's unwillingness to play with all-out intensity
The road trip was a snapshot of the season. The Pistons played uninspired against the defensively-challenged Phoenix Suns and were held to 72 points on New Year's Eve. They bounced back with a seesaw game against Utah on Monday but couldn't make enough clutch plays. Then, they trailed the Los Angeles Lakers by just three at halftime on Tuesday but fell apart in the third quarter and got blown out.

John Kuester's team gets three off-days to sort out its issues. They will have two practices before playing Philadelphia at home Saturday. The Pistons are still within striking distance of the No. 8 playoff seed in the Eastern Conference and play four of their next five against teams with losing records.
Kuester looks at the upcoming schedule as a challenge to his players to show whether they want to make something positive out of this season.
