Shearer injury dooms UDM in Horizon title game vs. GB, 66-53
The Detroit women gave it all they had and left everything out on the court, but playing shorthanded in the second half, the #2 Titans fell to the #1 Green Bay Phoenix, 66-53, in the Horizon League Championship at the Kress Events Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Detroit held a nine-point lead in the first half, but the Phoenix (30-1) would stage a late 1st half comeback and continue it in the second to earn the win after Titan sophomore Senee Shearer, who scored 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including four 3-pointers to help UDM hold on to the lead, left the game with a serious knee injury early in the 2nd half.
Freshman Shareta Brown finished with a team-high 22 points & nine rebounds and averaged 23.6 points & 6.6 rebounds per game in the tournament's three games, while shooting 60.5% from the field. It was Brown's 13th 20-point game on the season and she has now scored 583 points on the year, breaking the Titan record for the most points in a season – which was held by Cassandra Pack (576 in 1987, 22.2 ppg.).
With the Titan women finishing a strong second in the Horizon League during the regular season, Detroit will be in the postseason for the first time since 1997 as they earned the Horizon League's automatic bid into the WNIT. That bracket will be officially released late Monday night. It's the first WNIT appearance in school history and with the men in the NCAA Tournament, it marks the first time in school history that both programs will be playing postseason basketball for the Motor City.
