MSU loses tough to Ohio State; Central & Western suffer
Andrew Maxwell passed for 269 yards and one touchdown, but the #14 Ohio State Buckeyes held off the #20 Michigan State Spartans, 17-16, giving Urban Meyer a win in his first Big Ten game as Buckeyes coach. OSU's Braxton Miller threw for 179 yards and ran for 136. Michigan State (3-2, 0-1 Bg Ten) has now lost four home games in a row against Ohio State.
A pair of second-half turnovers thwarted two Central Michigan Chippewa comeback attempts in a league-opening 55-24 loss to the Northern Illinois Huskies. NIU poured on three touchdowns in the 4th quarter to secure its 18th consecutive win at home. The Chippewas (2-2, 0-1 MAC) came out of the half down just 10, and struck quickly with a 92-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage when Ryan Radcliff found Titus Davis for a short completion and Davis raced away to bring Central within three, 24-21. Outside of a field goal, that would be the last time Central scored any more points.
The Toledo Rockets, sporting new yellow helmets, capitalized on four Bronco turnovers in a 37-17 victory, handing Western Michigan its first loss at home since Oct. 30, 2010. Toledo out-gained Western in total yards, 521 to 405. The Rockets fumbled the ball three times, but were able to recover all three. Justin Currie paced the Bronco defense with 15 tackles, while Donald Celiscar had 12 and Desmond Bozeman had 11.
