Jimmy Howard with 34 saves and Damien Brunner had a goal and an assist Detroit blanks Phoenix 4-0 keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Johan Franzen scored one of his two goals early in the first period with Brunner scoring with 36 seconds left in the period for 2-0 lead after one.

Valtteri Filppula scored his eighth on the powerplay late in the second period then Howard goes to work with 12 saves in the third period for his 4th shutout of the season.

Detroit has 50 points and hosts the L.A. Kings Wednesday at Joe Louis Arena, Game Time 7:30 pm
