Escobar's walkoff hit dooms Tigers in 10 innings, 4-3
Yunel Escobar knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Tampa Bay Rays went on to defeat the Detroit Tigers, 4-3, at Tropicana Field.
James Loney hit a one-out single off of Tiger reliever Bruce Rondon(0-1). Pinch runner Sam Fuld then went to second when Will Myers singled. Both runners advanced after a wild pitch, and Escobar sealed the deal with a deep shot over Austin Jackson's head, scoring Fuld from third base.
Detroit started the scoring in the 3rd inning with three runs, thanks to Austin Jackson's homerun and Jhonny Peralta's single to bring home Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez.
Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander allowed three runs on nine hits in eight innings of work. Drew Smyly came in and pitched a scoreless 9th inning, but the Rays were able to rally in the 10th inning with Escobar's RBI off of reliever Bruce Rondon, who was just brought up from Toledo, for the extra inning victory.
The Tigers will try to take the series this Sunday afternoon when they send Rick Porcello (4-5) to the mound to face Jeremy Hellickson (6-3) at 1:30 pm.
