U-M takes down Irish; MSU defeats USF; MAC teams go 1-2
In front of a record-setting football crowd of 115,109, the #17 Michigan Wolverines defeated the #14 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 41-30, under the lights at Michigan Stadium. U-M's starting quarterback Devin Gardner threw for 294 passing yards & four touchdowns and set a team-high 82 rushing yards with a touchdown.
Defense was the key once again as the Michigan State Spartans held on long enough to defeat the South Florida Bulls, 21-6, at Spartan Stadium. Sophomore defensive end Shilique Calhoun scored a 4-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter and intercepted a pass for a 56-yard TD in the 3rd quarter.
Redshirt freshman kicker Ron Coluzzi drilled a 27-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Central Michigan Chippewas to a thrilling, come-from-behind 24-21 win over the New Hampshire Wildcats at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The kick completed a rally that saw the Chippewas score 17 points in the 4th quarter. Quarterback Cooper Rush led the 4th quarter rally with a pair of touchdown passes to sophomore Andrew Flory and junior Titus Davis.
The Eastern Michigan Eagles fell hard, 45-7, to the Penn State Nittany Lions in non-conference action at Beaver Stadium. Running back Bronson Hill carried the ball 13 times for 38 yards to lead the EMU rushing attack.
In front of 24,163 at Waldo Stadium, the Western Michigan Broncos fell short in their home-opener in a 27-23 loss to a FCS team in the Nicholls State Colonels. WMU's senior running back Brian Fields ran for three touchdowns and 111 yards, while fellow senior Dareyon Chance rushed for 126 yards.
