RED WINGS AND DANIEL CLEARY AGREE ON ONE-YEAR DEAL
The Detroit Red Wings announced that they have agreed to terms with forward Daniel Cleary on a one-year contract. In accordance with club policy, additional terms of the deal will not be disclosed.
Cleary, 34, returns to the Red Wings for his ninth season with the team and 15th in the NHL. The Carbonear, Newfoundland, native has recorded 265 points (119-146-265) and 262 penalty minutes in 540 games with the team. He also shows 49 points (23-26-49) and 66 penalty minutes in 111 postseason games for Detroit. Last season, Cleary was one of four Red Wings to skate in all 48 regular season games, notching 15 points (9-6-15). He finished second on the club in the postseason with 10 points (4-6-10) in 14 appearances.
In 869 career NHL games with Chicago, Edmonton, Phoenix and Detroit, the 6-foot, 208-pound winger shows 377 points (160-217-377), adding 52 points (24-28-52) in 121 postseason contests. A former first-round pick (13th overall) of the Blackhawks in 1997, Cleary helped the Red Wings to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances in 2008 and 2009, capturing his first Stanley Cup in 2008.
Cleary is expected to join the Red Wings in Traverse City, Mich., for the remainder of the team’s training camp.
