Gustav Nyquist scored twice in his return from Grand Rapids with Detroit beating Carolina 4-3. Nyquist scored :17 sec into the game for the 1-0 Red Wings lead. Darren Helm scored his third in the second period to increase the lead to 2-0. After the Hurricanes tied the game at two after two periods then Niklas Kronwall scored on the powerplay in the third period at 8:29.
Carolina cut the Red Wings lead late to 4-3 but Jonas Gustavsson made some key saves to preserve the win. Gustavsson made 24 saves.
