Frustration cost Verlander as Angels shutdown Tigers, 1-0
Justin Verlander, once again, put on an All-Star performance, but this time, the bats weren't working for Detroit as the Angles' Dan Haren outdueled Verlander as the Tigers were shutout by Los Angeles, 1-0.
Verlander (11-4) pitched 7 2/3 innings and gave up an earned run on seven hits -- three infield singles -- and two walks while striking eight on 129 pitches. As Verlander was taken out of the game, he had words for third-base umpire Angel Hernandez, and Verlander was ejected. Joaquin Benoit came in to get the final out of the eighth.
The ejections did not stop there. Earlier in the game, Verlander struck out designated hitter Bobby Abreu to finish a 1-2-3 first inning, but Abreu, who didn't agree with the called third strike, argued until home-plate umpire Angel Campos tossed him.
Between the sixth and seventh innings, Tigers manager Jim Leyland and first-base umpire Joe West exchanged words at the dugout and West ejected Leyland.
Austin Jackson and Jhonny Peralta were the only two Tiger batters to get a hit in throughout the whole game.
