Comeback falls short as Tigers go down in Kansas City, 4-3
Kansas City's Johnny Giavotella hit his first major league home run and also doubled as the Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers, 4-3.
Giavotella homered to left field off Tigers starting pitcher Max Scherzer (11-7), who did not return after the rain delay. Scherzer was 3-0 with a 0.89 ERA in his previous three starts against Kansas City.
Tigers star Victor Martinez, who injured his left knee Saturday night, did not play, but could return this Tuesday at Cleveland.
Down 4-0 in the 6th inning, the Tigers scored three times on RBI doubles by Andy Dirks, Austin Jackson and Miguel Cabrera, but that was as far as they could go.
The Tigers, currently in 1st place in the AL Central, will rest on Monday and head to Cleveland to begin a 3-game series against the Indians, beginning this Tuesday night.
