GM Dave Dombrowski ready to make moves in the offseason

Detroit Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski was happy about his team's success this past season, but will not be completly satisified until he brings a World Series Championship to the city that hasn't seen it since 1984. The core of this team is in tact, led by Justin Verlander on the pitching staff while Miguel Cabrera and family leading a lineup that put up a lot of runs all through the 2011 season to a AL Central Divison Title and just six wins away from a World Series Title.

The Tigers want to add a second or third baseman by signing a veteran or trading for one, but they may end up playing Brandon Inge and Don Kelly at third. A right-handed catcher will be on the roster to give Alex Avila a break and make designated hitter Victor Martinez a third option behind the plate.

The Tigers would like to have middle infielder Ramon Santiago back, but he might make more money elsewhere in an everyday role. Dombrowski doubts he’ll re-sign pitcher Brad Penny; is open to bringing back free agent third baseman Wilson Betemit later in the offseason; and says pitcher Joel Zumaya can return as a non-roster invitee.

Detroit plans to keep Delmon Young in left field, but doesn’t plan to offer the arbitration-eligible player a multi-year deal in the hopes of benefiting from him being motivated by the possibility of becoming a free agent next year.

Detroit won the Central Division by 15 games—the largest margin of any champion this year—eliminated the New York Yankees in a decisive Game 5 and exited the postseason in Game 6 of the AL championship series against Texas.
