Broncos rip apart Akron; NIU slips by Eastern Michigan
Western Michigan scored early and often against the Akron Zips as the Broncos rolled on to a 68-19 win to close out the regular season. It is the program's 11th perfect season at home and third under head coach Bill Cubit.
Tyler Van Tubbergen earned his first career start, spelling Alex Carder, and all he did was complete 19-of-21 passes for 252 yards and six passing TDs. He ran in another, totaling 60 yards on the ground.
WMU finishes the regular season at 7-5 and 5-3 in the MAC and are bowl eligible for the fifth time in seven seasons.
A late rally fell just short for the Eastern Michigan Eagles in an 18-12 loss to the Nothern Illinois Huskies at Huskie Stadium.
The loss ended EMU's season at 6-6 overall, its best season since the 1995 squad recorded a 6-5 record. The Eagles finished 4-4 in MAC play, their best league mark since the 2004 squad went 4-4. The loss also ended Eastern's hopes to become post-season bowl eligible as the Eagles needed seven wins for that distinction.
