Detroit returns to HL championship with 78-70 win vs. Raiders
The #2 Titans are just one win away from earning an automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament as Detroit defeated the #3 Wright State Raiders, 78-70, at the Kress Events Center on the campus of Green Bay.
The Titans advance to their sixth Horizon League Championship and the first since 2004. Detroit captured the 1997 Horizon League title (back when the conference was known as the MCC) for its only NCAA Tournament appearance and that was when head coach Autumn Rademacher was a star senior guard in the Motor City. UDM has also finished runner-up four times (1999, 2002, 2003, & 2004).
Freshman Shareta Brown scored a game-high 30 points – including 19 in the second half. It was her second career 30-point game and just one away from her career high. The Co-Horizon League Newcomer of the Year was 10-of-15 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line, while grabbing eight rebounds and handing out four assists – all in just 27 minutes.
Senior Jalesa Jones scored 13 points, a team-high five assists & three rebounds. Sophomore Senee Shearer and junior Chanahl Putnam each added 10 points apiece, while sophomore Megan Hatter nearly recorded her first career double-double ending with nine points and tying her career-best with nine rebounds.
This Sunday afternoon at 1 pm, the Titans will face a familiar foe in Green Bay on their campus for the 2012 Horizon League Championship. Later on in the evening at 6 pm, the UDM men will find out who they will face in the NCAA Tournament.
