With NFL commissioner Roger Goodell being joined by Lions wide reciever & Madden NFL 13 coverman Calvin Johnson on the stage at Radio City Music Hall, the announcement was made. With the 23rd pick in the 2012 NFL Draft draft, the Lions selected Iowa's offensive lineman Riley Reiff.

Reiff, 6-foot-5 3/4 and 313 pounds, was the first player from the Big Ten to be selected in this year's draft. He started all 13 games of his sophomore and junior seasons, respectively, at left tackle and he was named to the All-Big Ten team by the coaches and the media. Reiff left Iowa after his junior year to enter the NFL draft.

Also in the first round, QB Andrew Luck of Stanford was the #1 overall pick selected by Indianapolis, followed by another QB, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III, a.k.a. RG3, of Baylor who was picked by Washington. NCAA National Champion Trent Robinson, running back from Alabama went to Cleveland.

Nobody from the five D-I schools in the state of Michigan (U-M, MSU, Eastern, Central, Western) went in the first round. The draft continues this Friday night with the 2nd & 3rd rounds.
