TUESDAY, JULY 31 - The United States women's gymnastics team (Aly Raisman, Jordyn Wieber, Gabby Douglas, Kyla Ross, and McKayla Maroney) won the gold medal in spectacular fashion, decisively beating Russia 183.596 to 178.530. This was the first U.S. team gold medal in the event since 1996 and the second overall.

American soldier Vincent Hancock retained his Olympic skeet crown after a flawless display in the finals as the US drew level with China in the battle for supremacy in the medal count (tied at 23) on the shooting ranges. Under heavy grey skies in London, the US Army sergeant -- who revealed he considered quitting the sport last year -- hit all 25 targets in the finals, slamming the door on his rivals and setting a new Olympic record of 148.

In the final 10 meters of his history-making race, Michael Phelps was alone in the open – a fitting margin for an Olympic icon who is now the most decorated medal-winner of all time. Swimming the anchor leg of the men’s 4x200m-freestyle relay (including Matthew McLean, Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer, Ricky Berens, Davis Tarwater, & Charlie Houchin), Phelps held onto a significant lead and delivered the United States another gold medal – the 15th of his career and the 19th time he has stood on an Olympic podium.

Phelps now stands alone in the overall medal count, having broken a tie with Russian gymnast Larissa Latynina as the most-decorated athlete in the history of the Games. Earlier, he won the silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly event.
