U-M rips Illini; MSU & WMU fall in OT; EMU lose shootout
Behind a defense that surrendered just 134 total yards and garnered its first shutout of the season, the Michigan Wolverines shut out the Illinois Fighting Illini, 45-0, at Michigan Stadium on homecoming. Junior/sophomore linebacker Jake Ryan tied a career high with 11 tackles, including 3.5 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks. Fifth-year senior linebacker Kenny Demens also added eight tackles and his first career interception. U-M's senior quarterback Denard Robinson connected on 7-of-11 passes for 159 yards and two scores while also adding 128 yards and two scores rushing -- the seventh career game that Robinson has tallied two scores both on the ground and through the air.
Mark Weisman ran for 116 yards and scored a tying touchdown in the final minute of regulation as the Iowa Hawkeyes went on to beat the Michigan State Spartans, 19-16, in double overtime. Mike Meyer kicked field goals in both overtimes, including a 42-yarder in the second that gave the Hawkeyes (4-2, 2-0 Big Ten) their first lead of the game. Iowa then won it when MSU's Andrew Maxwell's deflected pass was intercepted by Greg Castillo. Le'Veon Bell ran for 140 yards and a touchdown for Michigan State, but the Spartans (4-3, 1-2) couldn't hold on late. Iowa drove 68 yards in nine plays and tied it at 13 on Weisman's 5-yard scoring run with 55 seconds left in the 4th quarter.
The Western Michigan Broncos made a 52-yard field goal as time expired, but came up short in overtime in a loss to the Ball State Cardinals, 30-24, to fall to 3-4 and 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The winning play for Ball State was a 15-yard run by Jahwan Edwards with tacklers draped on him, WMU played in its first overtime game since Oct. 24, 2009, winning 34-31 vs. Buffalo on Homecoming. The Broncos suffered their first OT loss since falling to Ball State in five overtimes, 60-57, on Oct. 8, 2005.
The Eastern Michigan Eagles and Toledo turned on the offensive fireworks on a cold and rainy day at Rynearson Stadium. By the time the last play was run the visiting Rockets had posted a 52-47 Mid-American Conference West Division football victory. Trailing by a 52-40 score, the Eagles cut the deficit to five, 52-47, with 1:57 left on a 7-yard touchdown run by sophomore tailback Bronson Hill. EMU stopped the Rockets on their next possession and the Eagles had one last offensive series to notch the win, but the game ended on a long desperation pass by Tyler Benz that was knocked down by the Toledo defense as time expired. Toledo entered the West Division battle with a perfect 3-0 league record and a 5-1 overall mark and now improve to 6-1 and 4-0. The Eagles remain winless with an 0-6 record (0-3 in the MAC).
