Burke helps Michigan beat Kansas in OT; MSU falls to Duke
The #4 Michigan Wolverines rallied after trailing the whole game, to earn a hard-fought 87-85 overtime win over the #1 Kansas Jayhawks in the South regional semifinals at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas (The site of next year's Final Four).
Down by 11 with 3:47 remaining in regulation, Michigan's Trey Burke scored 18 second half points, including a game-tying 3-pointer, to help the Wolverines to a 20-8 second half run to force overtime.
The Wolverines are now in the Elite Eight (South finals) and will play #3 Florida, who defeated the upstart #15 Florida Gulf Coast, 62-50. Game time is set for 2:20 pm this Sunday afternoon in Arlington.
Unfortunately for Michigan fans, they will not have a chance to face their in-state rival for a national championship. The $3 Michigan State Spartans suffered a tough loss to the #2 Duke Blue Devils in the Midwest regional semifinals, 71-61, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Keith Appling had 16 points for MSU and Adreian Payne scored 14. In addition, Derrick Nix had nine points and nine rebounds in his final college game.
Michigan State ends the season with a 16th straight NCAA tournament, an 11th Sweet 16 appearance, and 27 wins. Meanwhile #2 Duke will face #1 Louisville in the Midwest finals this Sunday. The Cardinals defeated #12 Oregon, 77-69, in the other Midwest semifinal.
The Elite Eight begins this Saturday afternoon at 4:30 pm as Big East foes #3 Marquette & #4 Syracuse clash in the East finals while #2 Ohio State faces #9 Wichita State in the West finals at 7 pm.
