It was a battle of wills on Wednesday night in Seattle, as the game's starters pitched flawlessly through eight innings. Detroit's Max Scherzer threw eight innings allowing one run on six hits, with twelve strike-outs. Seattle's starter Felix Hernandez threw a gem of his own, going eight innings giving up one run on four hits while striking out twelve Tigers. Detroit scored their first run in the fifth inning when Victor Martinez scored. Seattle answered in the seventh when Raul Ibanez singled in Mike Morse to tie the game 1-1. that would be all of the scoring until the top of the 14th inning when Don Kelly scored on a fielder's choice putting the Tigers up 2-1. Joaquin Benoit came out for the save in the 14th, and averted disaster when Brayan Pena held on to a great relay from deep right field, and survived a titanic collision with Justin Smoak at home-plate giving the Tigers the extended inning win. The Tigers will try for the series sweep on Thursday when they send ace Justin Verlander to the mound to face Hisashi Iwakuma for a 3:40 start.
