Tigers kickoff interleague action with 2-1 win over Phillies
Despite a 7-4 setback to the Chicago White Sox last Thursday, Detroit was able to bounce back with Alex Avila and Ramon Santiago lashing back-to-back doubles off Phillies starter Cole Hamels that produced runs, which allowed Doug Fister to go eight innings as the Tigers defeted Philadelphia, 2-1, at a sold-out Comerica Park.
Avila has made July his best month of the season so far by hitting .235 with 13 RBIs — his best totals in both categories for any month this season. Tigers closer Joaquin Benoit earned his 10th save in as many chances.
Interleague action continues for the Tigers as they will face the Phillies again this Saturday night at 7 pm.
