Athanasiou scores 1st career goal as Wings shutout Caps, 1-0
On a night where Stanley Cup champion & now-Hall of Famer Sergei Fedorov was honored, Andreas Athanasiou scored 4:06 into the 3rd period for his first career NHL goal to help the Detroit Red Wings shutout the Washington Capitals, 1-0. Goaltender Petr Mrazek finished the night with 38 saves.
Before the game, Fedorov dropped the ceremonial first puck and embraced Red Wings star Henrik Zetterberg and Ovechkin, both of whom are former teammates. He was honored by Detroit a day after being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, along with fellow teammate Niklas Lidstrom.
While a new college basketball season begins, the Red Wings will spend this Friday the 13th at the Joe Louis Arena as they get ready to take on the San Jose Sharks at 7:30 pm.
