History made at Calihan Hall as U-M women claim WNIT title
Though the season ended long ago for both men & women Detroit Mercy Titans, history was made at Calihan Hall in wild fashion as the Michigan Wolverines used 27 points from junior Katelynn Flaherty -- the tournament's Most Valuable Player -- and 25 points from senior Hallie Thome to defeat the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 89-79, in triple overtime to win the Women's National Invitation Tournament championship.
Michigan ends the season with the most wins in school history (28), along with their first ever postseason championship in a game that featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes. The game was sure to end in regulation, but Georgia Tech's Elo Edeferioka missed both free throws with 0.6 seconds remaining.
Flaherty, who passed 2,000 career points, had her 20th 20-point plus performance of the season, hitting four three-pointers and making 7-of-9 free throws. Thome was 9-for-16 from the field and was 7-for-9 from the free throw line, along with seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior Siera Thompson fnished with 13 points, eight assists, & four rebounds, sophomore Nicole Munger had 14 points, and junior Jillian Dunston contributed with 13 rebounds and a pair of steals.
The championship was won in Detroit, but their first ever banner will be raised in Ann Arbor at Crisler Center next season.
