After a week of rest & healing, the Detroit Red Wings go from enjoying spring break to getting a bad break in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals.

San Jose's Benn Ferriero scored 7:03 into overtime on a deflected goal that gave the Sharks a 2-1 victory. After the Sharks' 4-minute power play ended, he sent a shot toward the net that hit off Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart’s stick and got past goalie Jimmy Howard. Stuart slammed his stick to the ice in disgust after the goal, as the Sharks won their fourth overtime game already this postseason.

Nicklas Lidstrom scored in the first period for Detroit the day after his 41st birthday, but after two periods, Joe Thornton of San Jose took a big shot from just inside the blue line that Howard stopped, but Joe Pavelski batted the rebound down out of the air with his stick and into the net to tie it with 9:38 to go, giving San Jose’s first power-play goal in four games.

The Red Wings will try to shake off this loss and focus towards Game 2 in San Jose this Sunday afternoon at 3 pm ET before returning to the Joe Louis Arena this week for Games 3 & 4.

Sean Bergenheim scored early, Steven Stamkos added the go-ahead goal on a power play, and Dwayne Roloson made 26 saves, helping the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Washington Capitals, 4-2 in the series opener. Steve Downie had a goal and an assist, and Dominic Moore added an empty-netter with 40 seconds left for the Lightning, who have won four straight games since falling behind Pittsburgh 3-1 in the first round.
