Tigers trade Furbush & Wells to Seattle for Fister & Pauley
The Tigers have traded pitcher Charlie Furbush, Triple-A outfielder Casper Wells, Double-A third baseman Francisco Martinez and a player to be named later to the Seattle Mariners for starter Doug Fister and reliever David Pauley.
Fister, a 27-year-old right-hander, is 3-12 this season with a 3.33 ERA but has an impressive WHIP at 1.17. He struck out 89 batters with Seattle this season, while surrendering 139 hits and 32 walks. Fister is tied for seventh among all American League pitchers with 2.0 walks per nine innings.
Pauley, 28, has appeared in 39 games with Seattle in 2011, compiling a 5-4 record and 2.15 ERA. He is tied for the lead among all American League relievers with five wins.
Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski indicated that if the Tigers make another deal by Sunday afternoon’s deadline, it likely will involve acquiring a reliever.
Manager Jim Leyland said Fister’s first start will be this Wednesday vs. Texas as part of a 3-game series, which means it’s Max Scherzer on Tuedsay and Brad Penny on Thursday. Rick Porcello is scheduled to be the opening starting pitcher this Friday in Kansas City.
