Tigers refuse to be denied after late rally earns a 6-5 win
The Detroit Tigers, with that comeback ability, showed it Wednesday by winning in dramantic fashion, 6-5 in 10 innings against the Chicago White Sox.
Detroit, down 5-2 in the top of the 9th inning, bounced back with a solo homerun from Ryan Rayburn to cut the lead to 5-3. Soon after, White Sox manager Ozzie Gullien made a choice to have his closer Sergio Santos face pinch hitter Alex Avila and Avila made him pay by launching a game-tying two-run homerun to center field to even the score at five apiece.
In the 10th inning, Carlos Guillen singled home the go-ahead run to have the Tigers extended their longest winning streak in 77 years.
It's the first time Detroit won 12 in a row since 1934—when Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer and the Tigers lost a seven-game World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals’ famous Gas House Gang.
Jose Valverde finished up the 9th inning to remain perfect in 44 save opportunities this year and went on to striking out the side in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Tigers a chance to clinch the AL Central division Thursday night in Oakland.
