Tigers blank Oakland, 3-0 as Verlander earns win #24

Justin Verlander pitched eight innings, allowing three singles and gets his 24th victory as the Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland Athletics, 3-0. Verlander is the first MLB pitcher to win more than 23 games since Farmington Hills native Bob Welch did it with the Dodgers in 1990.

It was scoreless until the sixth when Austin Jackson, who struck out twice before, connected for his 10th homerun in deep center field for a 1-0 lead. That was enough for Verlander (24-5) who only walked three and struck out six.

Detroit put single runs in the eighth and ninth innings while Jose Valverde earned his 46th save in 46 opportunites in the final inning.
