The Detroit Tigers announced the organization has promoted Dave Owen to Director, Player Development and hired Al Nipper as its minor league pitching coordinator.

Owen, 53, joined the Tigers organization in 2011 to serve as the minor league infield coordinator. Prior to joining the Tigers organization, he spent three seasons as a coach at the major league level with the Kansas City Royals. He was the club’s bench coach in 2008, before he served as the third base coach in both 2009 and 2010.

Owen spent one season in Japan, serving as a coach with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters in 2007. He served as the minor league field coordinator for the Philadelphia Phillies for three seasons (2004-07) after spending 12 years as a scout with the Chicago White Sox (1992-96), Tigers (1997-99) and Phillies (2000-03).

Owen played professionally for 11 seasons after being selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 10th round of the June 1979 draft. He saw action at the major league level with the Cubs (1983-85) and Royals (1988).

Nipper, 52, joins the Tigers organization after spending the past nine seasons with the Boston Red Sox organization. He served as a special assignment pitching evaluator in Boston’s scouting department for the past five seasons (2007-11). Nipper served as the pitching coach with Single A Sarasota for two seasons (2003-04), before he spent one season as Boston’s minor league pitching coordinator in 2005 and as the club’s major league bullpen coach in 2006.

Nipper began his professional coaching career by serving as a minor league pitching coach in the Red Sox organization for six seasons (1992-97). He did serve as Boston’s major league pitching coach during his first tenure with the organization, doing so July 1995-April 1996. Nipper was the minor league pitching coordinator for the Texas Rangers organization for three seasons (1998-2000), before he worked two seasons as the major league pitching coach for the Kansas City Royals (2001-02).

Nipper pitched seven seasons at the major league level with the Red Sox (1983-87), Chicago Cubs (1998) and Cleveland Indians (1990). He was selected by Boston in the eighth round of the June 1980 draft.
