Prince Fielder powers Tigers past Cincinnati, 3-2
Prince Fielder blasted a first-pitch fastball into centerfield that scored Brennan Boesch to split the weekend series as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Reds, 3-2 at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.
Fielder hit his 10th home run of the season, his 12th in Cincinnati, and his fifth off Reds starter Bronson Arroyo in the 4th inning to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.
Justin Verlander threw six innings, allowed only two runs on six hits, struck out nine, and walked three.
Fielder and Ramon Santiago were the only two Tigers hitters with multiple hits and Jose Valverde pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 11th save of the season.
The Tigers look to take the three-game series on a hot Sunday afternoon when Max Scherzer takes the mound for Detroit.
