The Detroit Tigers defeated the St.Louis Cardinals 6-3 to open up a three game series at Comerica Park tonight.
Detroit started early with Delmon Young knocking in Miguel Cabrera with a groun ball single in the first inning. The Tigers went up 3-0 in the second inning when a double by Austin Jackson brought in Brennan Boesch,and Jhonny Peralta. The tigers added another with a sacrifice from Quintin Berry scoring Ramon Santiago to go up 4-0. Delmon Young continued his RBI onslaught on a single to right field to score Quintin Berry in the fifth making it 5-0.
St.Louis finally got on the board in the sixth inning on a sacrifice by Matt Holiday scoring Daniel Descalso to make it 5-1. Detroit added one more run in their half of the sixth when Miguel Cabrera knocked in Ramon Santiago. The Cardinals rallied in the seventh inning, scoring two more runs on a fielding error by Quintin Berry, when he dropped a fly ball hit by Carlos Beltran bringing in David Freese, and Daniel Descalso making it 6-3 Detroit. Justin Verlander pitched seven strong innings tonight for the Tigers allowing just three runs (one earned) on five hits, while striking out three batters to record his seventh win on the season, and bringing his interleague play record to 18-2. Joaquin Benoit and Phil Coke locked it down from the bullpen.
Lance Lyyn suffered the loss for the Cardinals tonight allowing five runs on nine hits, while striking out four batters in five innings of work. Detroit hopes to extend its winning streak tomorrow night when they send Rick Porcello (4-4, 5.18) to the mound against Jake Westbrook (5-6, 4.27)
