Angels rally in the ninth beat Tigers 3-2
The Tigers got off on the wrong track starting their road trip with a one-run loss to the Angels 3-2. Max Scherzer pitched a brilliant eight innings allowing just two runs on five hits while taking over the major league lead in strikeouts whiffing nine Angel batters. Detroit scored their runs on solo homers from Prince Fielder, and Alex Avila. Angel pitcher Ervin Santana pitched 6 2/3 innings surrendering two runs on four hits with ten strikeouts. Alberto Callaspo drove home pinch-runner Peter Bourjous with a two-out single in the ninth inning giving the Angels their ninth win in ten games. Detroit wasted a chance to pull even atop the AL Central with the White Sox, which lost to the Royals 7-5. Detroit (73-64) also lost ground to the Angels and Rays in the wild-card race.
The Tigers hope to even things up in the series Saturday night as they send ace Justin Verlander (13-7, 2.73) to the mound to face C.J. Wilson (11-9, 3.85).
