Jamey Carroll hit an RBI single in the tenth inning, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 2-1 victory Sunday night sweeping the day-night double-header over the Tigers leaving Detroit one game behind the White Sox in the AL Central with 10 games to go. Drew Smyly pitched 4 1/3 innings for Detroit giving up an unearned run on three hits and two walks. The unearned run came when Alex Avila threw wildly to first base on what should have been an inning-ending double play, allowing Pedro Florimon to score, tying the game 1-1. Al Alburquerque, and Joaquin Benoit held down the fort until the tenth inning when Tiger closer Jose Valverde gave up a lead off single to pinch-hitter Denard Span and then a one-out single to Jamey Carroll driving in the go-ahead run. Glen Perkins pitched a perfect tenth inning for Minnesota picking up his 14th save of the season.
The Tigers hope to get back to winning when they send ace Justin Verlander (15-8, 2.74) to the mound Monday night in game one of a four game series to face Royal starter Luke Hochevar (8-14, 5.40).
