[/url]Justin Verlander striking out seven in five innings of work and winning his first opening day start in six tries leading the Tigers over the Twins 4-2.
Detroit scored two in the first, Miguel Cabrera's ground out scored a run then Prince Fielder had an opposite field double to left to score the other run. Omar Infante's RBI single in the second assisted Verlander cool pitching performance.
He threw 91 pitches in 35 degree weather and 54 were strikes, the bullpen took over and in the ninth Phil Coke got the last two out for the save.
Detroit off Tuesday and play the Twins Wednesday afternoon in Minneapolis.
