Tiger rookie Drew Smyly pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings in a fill-in start for injured Max Scherzer. Smyly gave up just two hits, a walk, and struck out five, leaving after reaching 93 pitches. Detroit's bullpen stumbled though, when Phil Coke gave up a two-run homer to Ryan Doumit in the seventh inning putting the Twins up 2-0. Omar Infante countered in the eighth with a two-run homer knotting the game up 2-2. Brayan Villarreal took over in the eighth, giving up three walks to load the bases, before surrendering a one-out two-run double to Doumit giving him 4 RBI on the night,to put Minnesota up for good 4-2. The White Sox beat Tampa Bay 3-1 to pull to within one game of the Tigers in the AL Central. The Tigers hope to bounce back Saturday afternoon, when they send RHP Justin Verlander (16-8, 2.72) to face RHP P.J. Walters (2-4, 5.88) for a 4:05 start.
