Lions great Alex Karras suffering from kidney failure.
Former Detroit Lions All-Pro defensive lineman and accomplished actor Alex Karras has been given just a few days to live because of kidney failure. Karras, 77, has also been suffering from dementia. He is among the former NFL players suing the league over their treatment of head injuries. Karras was drafted 10th overall out of Iowa in 1958 and went on to play 12 stellar seasons for Detroit. He was a first-team All-Pro in 1960, 1961, and 1965. Karras also made the Pro Bowl four times. He missed the entire 1963 season when he was suspended by NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle after involvement in a gambling probe.
Karras was named as a defensive tackle on the All-Decade team of the 1960's by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Alex Karras was also an accomplished actor starring as Mongo in the 1974 classic comedy "Blazing Saddles", he was a commentator on Monday Night Football from 1974-76, and starred the 1980's hit sitcom Webster. He married his co-star Susan Clark who played his wife's character on the show they have a daughter Katie (b. 1980).
