Justin Verlander struck out 11 in a four-hitter to help the Detroit Tigers advance to a second straight AL championship series with a 6-0 shutout victory over the Oakland Athletics in the decisive Game 5 of the AL Division Series. Verlander tossed his first career postseason shutout and complete game with a 122-pitch masterpiece. The Tigers will face the winner of the other ALDS between the N.Y. Yankees and Baltimore in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series, which is scheduled for Saturday.

Buster Posey hit the third grand slam in Giants' postseason history as San Francisco pulled off an unprecedented revival, moving into the championship series with a 6-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds to wrap up the NL Divisional Series. The Giants became the first NL team to overcome a 2-0 deficit in the NLDS, which began in 1995. Major League Baseball's changed playoff format this season allowed them to become the first to take a best-of-five by winning the last three on the road. They will face the winner of the Washington-St. Louis series in the NLCS this Sunday.

Jayson Werth led off the bottom of the 9th inning with a 13-pitch at-bat against reliever Lance Lynn that ended with the ball landing beyond the wall in left field, giving the Washington Nationals a well-earned 2-1 victory over the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals to force a deciding Game 5 in the NL Division Series. The best-of-five series will end this Friday night in Washington, D.C. with the winner advancing to face the San Francisco Giants in the NLCS. The starters will provide a rematch of Game 1, which Washington won, with Gio Gonzalez on the mound for the Nationals and Adam Wainwright for the Cardinals.

The Baltimore Orioles won Game 4 of the AL Divisional Series by bouncing back to outlast the New York Yankees, 2-1, in 13 innings on J.J. Hardy's RBI double. The Orioles will get a chance to overtake the Yankees in a winner-take-all Game 5 this Friday afternoon. The teams have already split 22 games this year, and it all comes down this: a matchup for a spot in the AL Championship Series against the AL Central champion Detroit Tigers. Game 1 winner CC Sabathia is set to pitch the deciding game for the Yankees against Baltimore's Jason Hammel.
