Tigers win ALCS Game 1 6-4 in 12; Derek Jeter fractures ankle. Out for season.
The Detroit Tigers win game one of the ALCS 6-4 in 12 innings,while the Yankees lost their captain Derek Jeter with a fractured ankle. Doug Fister pitched six scoreless innings getting out of bases loaded jams in the first and second innings with some spectacular defensive help from Jhonny Peralta. Delmon Young knocked in three runs including a home-run giving Detroit a 4-0 lead heading into the ninth inning handing the ball to closer Jose Valverde. Thats when the wheels fell off. Ichiro Suzuki and Raul Ibanez both hit two-run homers to tie the game at 4 all. The Tigers then scored two runs in the twelfth with RBI's from Delmon Young and Andy Dirks going up 6-4. Disaster then struck for New York when Derek Jeter fractured his left ankle after falling awkwardly while attempting to field a grounder from Jhonny Peralta. Drew Smyly got the win in relief for Detroit pitching two innings and surrendering just one hit. Detroit hopes to take a two game lead in the series as they send Anibal Sanchez (0-1, 2.84) against Hiroki Kuroda
(0-0, 2.16) on Sunday for a 4:00 P.M. start.
