Bryce Harper hit a solo homerun off Anibal Sanchez in the fifth inning to help the Nationals get a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The game at Nationals Park began after a 57-minute rain delay.
Sanchez had gone 59 2/3 innings without allowing a homerun. The last home run he gave up came on September 20, 2012, against Oakland. Sanchez (3-3) allowed eight hits and no walks in six innings, with eight strikeouts. He allowed three runs, two earned.
It was the first loss for Sanchez against the Nationals. He came into the game 8-0 with a 1.97 ERA in 19 previous outings against the club.
The Tigers will try again this Thursday afternoon at 4 pm as part of a makeup game from Tuesday before return home for a weekend series with Cleveland.
