Grand slam spoils Verlander's day as Tigers lose to Indians, 4-0
Justin Verlander pitched seven shutout innings, but the Detroit Tigers lost the game, 4-0, to the Cleveland Indians when reliever Joaquin Benoit allowed a grand slam homerun to Mike Aviles in a scoreless game in the 9th inning.
Verlander finished with seven strong innings, allowing only four hits, two walks — both in the first inning — and struck out six batters. Omar Infante had two hits and Alex Avila three hits, and yet the Tigers were still unable to score a run.
The Tigers will start their Labor Day week with a long 9-game road trip this Monday afternoon when they face the Red Sox in Boston at 1:30 pm.
