Verlander & Tigers shut down A's, 3-0, to advance into ALCS
Justin Verlander did it again as he helped the Detroit Tigers defeat the Oakland Athletics in Game 5 of an American League Division Series for the second straight season with a 3-0 shutout at the O.co Coliseum.
The Tigers became the first team to advance to the AL Championship Series in three consecutive years since the N.Y. Yankees did it from 1998 to 2001. Verlander took a no-hitter into the 7th inning before Yoenis Cespedes broke it up with a two-out single to center and Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homerun to left in the 4th inning off of A’s rookie pitcher Sonny Gray.
The Tigers will move on to face the Red Sox in the ALCS starting this Saturday night in Boston. Anibal Snchex is set to start in Game 1 for Detroit.
