Western Michigan defeats Toledo to become MAC champions

The Western Michigan Broncos clinched a trip to the NCAA Tournament by winning the 2014 Mid-American Conference championship with a 98-77 victory over the Toledo Rockets at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The Broncos improve to 23-9 on the season, and will find out Sunday evening who they will face in the NCAA Tournament.

The trip to the NCAA Tournament will be the fourth in program history for the Broncos, and the first since the 2003-04 season. It is the second time WMU has won the MAC title.

David Brown and Shayne Whittington were each named to the MAC All-Tournament team, with Brown earning Tournament MVP honors; he is the first Bronco to take the honor since Mike Williams led WMU to the NCAA Tournament at the end of the 2004 season. Brown averaged 24 points per game over two games, including a game- and career-high 32 points in the championship effort against Toledo. Whittington averaged 19 points and 13 rebounds per game, and recorded his 14th double-double of the season with 20 points & 13 rebounds against the Rockets.
